STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

An original painting created for purchase award entry
Deland Historic Courthouse, Deland Florida • August 2006

ARTIST STATEMENT
The sixteen 12” x 12” panels represent the individuals and diverse cultures within a community. All of the panels together form one 4’ x 4’ painting of which the latitude and longitude coordinates (of Deland) become connected. The individual pieces of art stand well on their own, much like the individuals within a community. The underlying message, a gathering of individual pieces together, is the formation of a greater piece - a greater piece not only in size, but metaphorically speaking, there’s strength in numbers.

The message that I speak of - not new, sparkly or earth shattering, continues to surface from generation to generation and I think is a much needed reminder for all; the very thread that connects a community is the uniqueness of each and every man, woman, child, job and cultural influence.

I scribed each panel with a word that represents Florida. The Haiku was written about what Florida means for me and the opportunities that I see for all that live, work, and play in Florida.
